MCP Ukrainian Calendar — Open-Source MCP Server
The Brief
Ukrainian cultural heritage needed digital preservation in a format accessible to modern AI tools. The ethnographic research of Valerii Voytovych — covering pre-Christian holidays, the Slavic pantheon, and agricultural folk wisdom — existed only in printed books. The goal: make this knowledge queryable by AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol.
How We Built It
Built a TypeScript MCP server with 9 specialized tools: holiday lookup by date/name/season, deity search by group (supreme, warrior, fertility, underworld, nature, household), daily folk wisdom, and personal birth charm calculator. All data hand-curated from Voytovych's "Українська Міфологія" — 120 holidays with traditions, rituals, and preparation guides; 184 deities with full descriptions; 365 proverbs mapped to calendar days; 8 birth charm periods.
Architecture: zero runtime dependencies beyond MCP SDK. All content embedded as JSON datasets. Published to npm, installable via npx mcp-ukrainian-calendar. Works out-of-the-box with Claude Desktop, Claude Code CLI, and Cursor.
Impact & Outcomes
Listed on mcpservers.org as a cultural knowledge MCP server. Used by developers and AI enthusiasts to enrich conversations with authentic Ukrainian cultural context. The project demonstrates how MCP servers can preserve and distribute cultural heritage through AI — making ethnographic knowledge accessible to anyone conversing with Claude or other MCP-compatible assistants.
